изменение высоты и прокрутка

Добрый день. Изменяю скриптом DOM. Если изначально высота страницы меньше высоты окна браузера, а после изменений - больше, то вертикальная полоса прокрутки не добавляется.
Можно ли заставить браузер пересчитать высоту страницы или нужно как-то самому добавлять полосы прокрутки и управлять ими?

фиксированная высота контейнера, фиксированное позиционирование, overflow:hidden

Да, высота страницы фиксированная, позиционирование тоже, overflow: auto;
Как при этом раскладе заставить браузер показывать правильно полосы прокрутки? если ставлю overflow: scroll; полосы появляются но пустые.
